Senior Member of State Attorney General's Office Joins Foley Hoag LLP Litigation Team

March 22, 2004

Dean Richlin Served As Principal Legal Advisor to Attorney General Tom Reilly

Former First Assistant Attorney General Dean Richlin today joined the Boston law firm of Foley Hoag LLP as a partner in the firm's highly respected Litigation practice.

"Foley Hoag is one of this country's premier law firms, and is committed to excellence," Mr. Richlin said. "The firm has been a leader within the legal profession, and has always played a meaningful role in the larger community." He continued: "Foley Hoag represents the very best in legal practice and I am proud and honored to join the firm at this time."

Most recently, as lead trial counsel for the state, Mr. Richlin successfully defended the Commonwealth from a claim for additional attorneys' fees by the firms that represented the state in its case against the tobacco industry. That effort resulted in what is believed to be the largest defense verdict in the history of the state, and will save the Commonwealth billions of dollars.

Mr. Richlin became First Assistant Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in January 1999. During his five-year tenure, Mr. Richlin was the principal legal advisor to Attorney General Thomas Reilly, and served as the lead or supervising attorney on all major cases and initiatives handled by the Attorney General's office during that period. He directed the Attorney General's effort to maintain stability in the health industry, including the Harvard Pilgrim receivership and rehabilitation, the turnaround plan for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and the transfers of the Melrose, Whidden, and Deaconess Nashoba hospitals. Working with federal authorities and attorneys from other states, he coordinated the office's investigation of and enforcement actions against the pharmaceutical industry for price misrepresentation, misuse of patents, and other anti-competitive behavior. He also oversaw the litigation and appellate strategy in the still-pending case seeking stricter penalties against Microsoft for its practices regarding Web services.

Mr. Richlin personally negotiated settlements of major business regulation cases, including the state-mandated cleanup by General Electric of the Housatonic River, the return of royalty rights and payments for pharmaceuticals invented at the Commonwealth's state laboratory, and the payment to charities of an additional $30 million and the acceptance of governance reforms in connection with the sale of the Boston Red Sox in 2002.

Prior to joining the office of the Attorney General, Mr. Richlin was a partner with the law firms of Lucash, Gesmer & Updegrove and Budd, Wiley & Richlin.

Mr. Richlin recently completed a term as a member of the Council of the Boston Bar Association and is a former New England committee member of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. He is currently president of Temple Israel of Boston. He received a B.A. degree from Wesleyan University and a J.D. degree from the Boston University School of Law
