Foley Hoag a ‘Real Force in International Law Disputes’; Shares Top Ranking in the Independent Chambers Global 2011 Guide

May 13, 2011

Law industry bible Chambers and Partners has ranked Foley Hoag LLP in the top tier of the world’s public international law practitioners in its new Chambers Global 2011 Guide, noting the firm has “emerged as a real force in international law disputes.”

Widely used by States and other clients to select counsel, the independent guide notes that Foley Hoag’s Public International Law practice carries one of the largest International Court of Justice caseloads. Foley Hoag clients “report that they choose the firm because of the team's success in representing states, especially regarding the delimitation of maritime boundaries,” the guide states. “It has a particularly strong track record in relation to Latin America.”

The guide, which bases its rankings on interviews with lawyers and clients, quoted a source who said, “The lawyers have thorough knowledge, outstanding written and oral advocacy, and are able to serve at all times and in all circumstances.”

The ranking named as key individuals in the practice Paul Reichler, who heads the practice, and Lawrence Martin, who is featured in many cases. Clients describe Reichler as “an excellent legal tactician and advocate, and exceptional team leader,” according to the guide. Both are based in Foley Hoag’s Washington, DC office.

Chambers and Partners also ranked Foley Hoag’s Ron Goodman, co-chair of Foley Hoag’s international litigation and arbitration practice, as a notable practitioner in Latin-America-wide international arbitration. Goodman “is highly active on the investor-state side.” He leads various ICSID cases, including several acting in defense of Venezuela against claims of over $7 billion. This practice is listed in the Global Arbitration Review 100, a separate guide to specialist counsel. Goodman is also based in the firm’s Washington, DC office.

Since 1999, Chambers and Partners has been researching the legal markets of over 180 countries, identifying leading lawyers and law firms worldwide through interviews with thousands of attorneys and their clients. It stakes its reputation on the independence and objectivity of its research.
