Foley Hoag Congratulates Alma Del Mar Charter School on Opening for Its First School Year

September 20, 2011

Foley Hoag LLP client Alma del Mar charter school opened its doors for its inaugural school year at the end of August in New Bedford, Mass.

Lawyers from Foley Hoag represented Alma del Mar pro bono as it completed the charter application phase and prepared to open. Legal matters ranged from drafting school policies and employment contracts to negotiating a lease on a surplus city school building.

The firm’s lawyers combined their experience in administrative and regulatory law with skills in representing educational institutions to help the school prepare for its inaugural year, said Foley Hoag associate Tad Heuer, who represents the school along with partner Colin Zick and counsel Jonathan Book.

“It was a privilege to work with the innovative team at Alma del Mar, and we wish the school and its students continued success both this year and as the school grows in the future,” Heuer said.

The new school was one of 16 public charter schools approved this year by the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Alma del Mar currently has 120 students in kindergarten through second grade, and plans to grow into a K-8 school with 360 students over the next several years.

Foley Hoag has extensive experience representing public and private education clients on a range of complex legal issues, including institutional governance, student affairs, facilities planning and faculty employment. Foley Hoag’s lawyers have acted as general counsel to colleges, universities and preparatory schools, and frequently advise educational institutions on issues as diverse as federal and state regulation, labor relations, and the protection of intellectual property.
