Hemmie Chang Moderates MassChallenge Corporate Partnering Panel for Healthcare, Life Sciences
September 1, 2011
Foley Hoag LLP partner Hemmie Chang, chair of the firm’s Licensing and Strategic Alliances Practice Group, moderated a MassChallenge panel on corporate partnering in healthcare and life sciences on Aug. 31.
MassChallenge, a global startup competition, hosted the panel for its finalists in healthcare and life sciences. The panel included executives from Johnson & Johnson, ViThera Laboratories, Translational Therapeutics Inc., and BioInnovation Consulting.
Panelists spoke from the perspective of both a large strategic partner and an emerging company, and they discussed the critical points of deal making, including what a strategic partner seeks and how an emerging company can best present itself.
The panel also addressed trends in equity investments and bridge financing as an additional value component. Participants also provided insight on how emerging companies can figure out what matters to potential partners and points to consider before making a deal.
MassChallenge runs a $1 million global startup competition and accelerator to catalyze the launch and success of high-growth, high-impact new businesses. The competition is open to any startup in the world, in any industry. MassChallenge is designed to identify, strengthen and facilitate funding for the world’s highest impact startups, and the judging criteria are focused on the entrants’ proposed impact and their potential for success. Every MassChallenge entrant receives access to training, feedback, PR and networking support from experts, and the highest-potential startups receive three months of intensive mentorship and free services in 22,000 square feet of office space on Boston’s Fan Pier.
