Foley Hoag Client 38 Studios Launches Much-Anticipated First Game ‘Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning’
February 7, 2012
Foley Hoag LLP congratulates its client 38 Studios, LLC on the launch of its first title, “Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.”
“Reckoning” is an epic, open world role-playing game that gives fans their first experience in the world of Amalur, a new universe imagined by New York Times best-selling author R.A. Salvatore, brought to life by renowned artist and “Spawn” creator Todd McFarlane, and designed by Ken Rolston and the team at 38 Studios’ Big Huge Games subsidiary. The game is the first chapter of a vast new fantasy universe and adds a new level of intense action combat to the genre and a one-of-a-kind advancement system as players unfold and evolve their destiny through constant character customization.
38 Studios was founded by Major League Baseball three-time World Series Pitcher Curt Schilling in 2006, and Foley Hoag has represented the company since 2007. Foley Hoag advises 38 Studios on wide-ranging legal matters including corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, technology licensing, intellectual property, employment and immigration.
“Having advised 38 Studios on its acquisition of Big Huge Games, it’s particularly exciting to see ‘Reckoning’ come to life,” said Foley Hoag partner Alex Aber, Deputy Chair of the firm’s Business Department and Co-Chair of the firm’s Interactive Media and Technology Practice Group. “As gamers, even before viewing the first reveal of ‘Reckoning’ at PAX East last year and getting to play early versions of the game at the Providence studio, we could appreciate the 38 Studios vision and see that the company was building a very different kind of RPG. We congratulate everyone at 38 Studios on this important milestone and what promises to be the first of many commercially successful products based on the Kingdoms of Amalur IP.”
Foley Hoag has long been an essential partner to software and technology companies. The firm’s interdisciplinary team in its Interactive Media and Technology Practice provides ongoing counsel to clients, including advising on business launches, contracts and licensing, intellectual property protection, financing, mergers and acquisitions, and litigation.
“Foley Hoag has been an important partner over the years – championing and supporting our vision from day one,” said Curt Schilling, founder and chairman of 38 Studios.
38 Studios Chief Executive Officer Jen MacLean added, “Our team at Foley Hoag excels at giving us timely and practical advice. They understand our business and goals and their expertise and judgment is exceptional.”
Developed by 38 Studios subsidiary Big Huge Games in Baltimore and 38 Studios in Providence, RI, “Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning” is available on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and PC. For more information, visit www.reckoning.com.
