Foley Hoag Secures Pro Bono Win With PAIR for Immigrant Detainee
December 2, 2011
A legal team from Foley Hoag LLP recently secured a victory for an immigrant detainee in Massachusetts on behalf of the Political Asylum/Immigration Representation Project.
Partner Michael Boudett, along with former associate Rachel Brown, represented a woman born in a refugee camp outside Laos, who was detained while in removal proceedings. The team secured her release from prison through a federal habeas corpus action, and then persuaded the immigration court to grant her withholding of removal under the Convention Against Torture in October.
The Political Asylum/Immigration Representation Project (PAIR) is the leading provider of pro bono immigration legal services to asylum-seekers and immigrants unjustly detained in Massachusetts. Foley Hoag has been working with PAIR since 1991 and has assisted detained immigrants in a variety of legal venues.
Foley Hoag’s pro bono program has been a hallmark of the firm since its representation of the plaintiffs in the original lawsuit to desegregate the Boston public schools. In its annual pro bono report in 2011, The American Lawyer ranked Foley Hoag No. 8 in its evaluation of the pro bono efforts of the top 200 firms identified in its annual “AmLaw 200” listing.
