Foley Hoag Partner Recognized for Work With LevelUp Your Startup

ABA Journal Calls Paul Sweeney a Legal Rebel

September 19, 2011

Foley Hoag LLP partner Paul Sweeney was one of 10 lawyers nationwide who were selected by the ABA Journal as Legal Rebels — those who have introduced innovative ideas to the profession.

The ABA Journal recognized Sweeney for his work with the LevelUp Your Startup program, which was run by Foley Hoag client SCVNGR. With LevelUp Your Startup, individuals met with a Foley Hoag lawyer as part of an initiative to help entrepreneurs get their companies incorporated. Participants would then have the opportunity to meet with top-tier venture capital investors and startup accountants.

This effort was a unique method to provide legal assistance to startups and validated Foley Hoag’s commitment to using fresh, unorthodox tactics in ways that make sense to a new generation of emerging companies. All proceeds from the program were donated to MassChallenge, a local nonprofit that provides startups with business training and access to investors.

LevelUp Your Startup was based on SCVNGR’s LevelUp, which combines location-based gaming mechanics with daily deals, creating a powerful new model for building customer loyalty. Customers received a deal for trying a business, and saw more deals as a reward for coming back. Programs included LevelUp Your Burrito, LevelUp Your Rock Climbing and LevelUp Your Fitness.
