Foley Hoag Partner to Host Live Events Analyzing Supreme Court’s Affordable Care Act Ruling

Those With Business, Legal Interest in The Law Invited to Briefings With Health Care Legal and Regulatory Expert Tom Barker

July 3, 2012

Tom Barker, Chair of the Foley Hoag Health Care Practice, will host forums in Washington and Boston during the week of July 9 on the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the next steps for the Obama Administration, Congress and the fifty states.

Barker is the former General Counsel for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which administers the Medicaid and Medicare programs, and the Department of Health and Human Services. He will host the in-depth briefings on July 10 at the Hay Adams Hotel in Washington D.C. and on July 12 at Foley Hoag’s main office in Boston.

The briefing is open to people with business and/or legal interests in the ACA and its ramifications.

Barker will examine the impact of the Court’s decision to uphold the individual mandate, as well as the significance of the Court’s holding on the Medicaid expansion.  He will discuss the regulations to implement the health insurance reforms in 2014, and the implications for employers, providers, insurers and others.

“The ruling continues to raise questions as its implications sink in.  Interested parties are going to be asking what it means for them, their families and businesses,” Barker said. “We hope to clarify as much as we can for them.”

Barker’s practice focuses on complex federal and state healthcare legal and regulatory matters with a special expertise in Medicare and Medicaid law and regulations. Prior to joining the firm, he was acting General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and General Counsel of CMS. Serving in the Bush Administration, he played a key role in the implementation of every major health policy initiative enacted during his tenure, including the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit (Medicare Part D) and Medicaid modernization.
