Foley Hoag AARPI Special Counsel Pierre d'Argent to Host Massive Open Online Course Dedicated to International Law
April 23, 2015
Beginning on April 30, 2015, Foley Hoag AARPI special counsel Pierre d'Argent will launch a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the subject of international law. This eight-week course will provide a general introduction to international law, its sources, the rules relating to the international responsibility of States and international organizations, the pacific settlement of disputes, and the rules relating to the maintenance of international peace and security.
As the first general course on public international law available in the MOOC format, d’Argent's program will also teach participants how and by whom international law is made; by whom it must be respected and how it is applied; and what happens when binding rules are breached and how it possible to seek justice. The course will extensively rely on judgments and advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN).
At Foley Hoag AARPI, d’Argent specializes in representing States before the ICJ and other international courts and tribunals. He is a first-class full-time professor (professeur ordinaire) at the University of Louvain in Belgium, where he holds the Public International Law Chair. d’Argent has been invited to teach a specialized course on “L'obligation internationale” at the Hague Academy of International Law during the Public international law summer session of 2015.
