Foley Hoag Named a Top International Law Firm by Latinvex
November 30, 2016
Foley Hoag LLP was recently named a top international law firm in Latin America by Latinvex, an online publisher of daily news and weekly analysis on Latin American business.
Each year, Latinvex ranks international law firms in Latin America, both overall and in 13 subcategories. Foley Hoag ranked 13th overall for 2016. The firm also ranked 2nd in Arbitration, 3rd in Litigation and 9th in FCPA & Fraud.
Foley Hoag’s International Litigation and Arbitration Department has a long history of advising Latin American countries in complex state-to-state disputes and investor-state arbitration. Most recently, the firm achieved high profile victories in three major international cases: obtaining a favorable judgment for El Salvador, which had been facing a demand for over $314 million in estimated lost profits from mining company Pac Rim Cayman; a precedent-setting defense of Uruguay’s strict regulation of tobacco packaging over Philip Morris; and the successful dismissal of a $100 million case against Venezuela around fake promissory notes.
Results for the Latinvex rankings are primarily compiled through an exclusive survey which is distributed amongst firms. The final lists are based on a combination of factors, such as value, prominence and scope of work over a 12-month period, as well as references from clients and peers.
In April 2016, Latinvex named Foley Hoag partners Clara Brillembourg and Mélida Hodgson to its 2016 Latin America's Top 100 Female Lawyers list. Both were recognized in the Arbitration & Litigation category.
