Foley Hoag Attorneys Neil Austin, Christopher Hart and Kelly Caiazzo Receive Friend of Justice Award from MACDL

December 7, 2017

Foley Hoag LLP attorneys Neil Austin, Christopher Hart and Kelly Caiazzo have been named recipients of the Friend of Justice Award, given by the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (MACDL). The award, which honors lawyers who have worked with MACDL to further its mission, was presented on December 6 at MACDL's Winter/Annual Meeting.

Austin, Hart and Caiazzo were recognized for representing MACDL in drafting an amicus curiae brief to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court that ultimately led to the abolition of the felony murder doctrine. The doctrine previously acted to make a defendant who was guilty of a felony also guilty of a killing committed during that felony, even when there was no intent to kill.

MACDL is the only statewide association of lawyers in Massachusetts devoted exclusively to serving all segments of the defense bar. Its mission is to preserve the adversary system of justice; to maintain and foster independent and able criminal defense lawyers and to ensure justice and due process for persons accused of crime.
