Foley Hoag Adds Five Partners to Strengthen its Premier Investment Management, Business, and Intellectual Property Practices

Therefore, we are delighted to announce the appointment of five new partners, Jeffrey Collins, Sarah Cooleybeck, Michael Dowd, Malcolm Henderson, and Kevin Oliver, to enhance our premier Investment Management, Business, and Intellectual Property practices,” said Michele Whitham, Co-Managing Partner of Foley Hoag LLP.

Jeffrey Collins and Malcolm Henderson are both members of Foley Hoag’s Business Department focusing on the practice areas of investment advisers and private investment funds, corporate finance and securities, and venture capital/emerging companies.

Jeffrey Collins concentrates in the areas of investment advisers and private investment funds and venture capital financings. He has extensive experience in connection with the formation of hedge funds both in the United States and in various offshore jurisdictions. He represents a diverse group of investment advisers with respect to registration and regulatory compliance matters. In addition, he has represented many emerging companies in connection with venture capital and angel financings.

Mr. Collins received his Bachelor of Arts from Brown University and his Juris Doctorate from Duke University School of Law.

Malcolm Henderson concentrates in the areas of corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, and high technology, with a special focus on bank debt financings. He has extensive experience representing both borrowers and lenders in secured and unsecured debt financings, including large syndicated transactions, cross-border deals, leveraged recapitalizations and acquisition financings. He has advised buyers and sellers in various forms of acquisitions and assists public and private companies with respect to securities laws matters. He also advises emerging companies on capitalization, technology licensing and general corporate matters.

Mr. Henderson received his Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Yale University and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia.

Sarah Cooleybeck and Michael Dowd, members of the firm's Litigation Department, and Kevin Oliver, a member of the firm's Business Department, practice in the area of intellectual property.

Sarah Cooleybeck focuses on patent litigation, representing clients in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device industries. She has extensive experience handling all aspects of complex litigation, including work with a broad range of technical and financial experts and substantial trial experience. Prior to joining Foley Hoag, Ms. Cooleybeck served as a law clerk to Judge Patti B. Saris of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

Ms. Cooleybeck received her undergraduate degree with high honors from the University of Michigan and her Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from Harvard Law School.

Michael Dowd concentrates on patent litigation, and has significant experience in guiding clients throughout the litigation process, from pre-suit investigations and negotiations through trial and appeal. His practice encompasses complex patent matters covering a broad range of technical specialties, including electronics, medical devices and biotechnology. Prior to practicing law, Mr. Dowd spent eight years working in industry as an engineer.

Mr. Dowd received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees from Cornell University and his Juris Doctorate from Columbia Law School, where he was a James Kent Scholar.

Kevin Oliver is a registered patent attorney with experience in the areas of intellectual property including patents, trade secrets, trademarks, and litigation. He has written patent applications directed to fiber optic components, communications systems, signal and image processing systems, medical devices, and semiconductor processing systems and methods, and counsels clients with regard to patent filings, non-infringement, and validity issues. Prior to becoming a patent attorney, he worked as a software systems engineer at Hewlett-Packard Company designing algorithms for electrocardiograms and defibrillators and at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Raytheon Company designing algorithms for Radar systems.

Mr. Oliver received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, graduating with highest distinction, from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, his Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Signal Processing from the University of Southern California, and his Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School.
