Anthony Rufo is an Associate in Foley Hoag’s Litigation Department, where he focuses in the areas of intellectual property (including trademark, copyright, and patent matters), false advertising and international trade disputes. He also maintains an active pro bono practice, participating in several of the firm’s well-established pro bono programs.
Anthony’s practice touches upon all facets of trademark law including disputes, prosecution and portfolio management. He has represented clients in federal trademark infringement suits, and has independently overseen complex fact investigation, taken and defended depositions, and prepared and argued motions. Anthony routinely represents clients in adversarial proceeding before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), and has litigated TTAB cases through trial. He also advises clients on strategically building and managing their trademark portfolios, and has successfully prosecuted trademarks through registration at the Patent and Trademark Office. Anthony has also advised companies on issues related to false advertising. In regard to copyright, he has experience in infringement matters including representing a client in a civil litigation involving fair use in an academic setting. Anthony has also assisted in a number of patent litigations. His experience extends to intellectual property protection for pharmaceutical and life sciences companies, including representing patent owners in Hatch-Waxman litigation.
Anthony has participated in a number of international trade disputes including civil litigations as well as appellate matters. He is multi-lingual and has actively practiced in both Spanish and German.
Prior to joining Foley Hoag, Anthony interned for the Honorable George A. O’Toole of the United States District Court with the District of Massachusetts. He also served as a student attorney in the Suffolk University Law School Immigration Clinic, where he successfully represented a foreign national in an matter arising under the Convention Against Torture. Before studying law, Anthony had a decade of experience in financial services including work as corporate compliance manager for an international fiduciary bank.
