Stanford Law School’s Fair Use Project and Foley Hoag Defend Documentary Filmmaker’s Fair Use and Free Speech Rights; Seek Damages for Wrongful Takedowns Oct 11, 2007 Send to a Coleague

October 11, 2007

SUMMARY

Excerpt:

The Fair Use Project of the Center for Internet & Society at Stanford Law School and its co-counsel Foley Hoag LLP filed an answer and counterclaim in Massachusetts federal court Tuesday on behalf of filmmaker Floyd Webb, who is being sued over material he is using on the Internet to promote a documentary about Count Dante, an enigmatic, Chicago martial arts legend from the 1960s who founded the Black Dragon Fighting Society. The society’s current "Grand Master," William Aguiar III, alleges that Webb’s promotional website and film trailer infringe copyrights and trademarks that Aguiar now controls. But Webb believes he has the right to use the disputed material under the "fair use" doctrine and seeks damages against Aguiar for misrepresentation of copyright under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Boston, MA - October 10, 2007

SUMMARY

The Southern Center for Human Rights will present the Frederick Douglass Human Rights Award to the lawyers at firms, public interest organizations, and in the military who are protecting the fundamental rights of so-called "enemy combatants" detained at Guantánamo Bay. The Awards Dinner, to be held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Washington, D.C., will take place on November 1, 2007 at 6 p.m. Shayana Kadidal of The Center for Constitutional Rights, Thomas B. Wilner with the law firm Shearman & Sterling LLP, and Major Michael D. Mori will accept the award on behalf of the honorees. Bob Herbert, Op-ed Columnist at The New York Times, will deliver the keynote address.

The Southern Center for Human Rights (SCHR) is a nationally-recognized public interest law firm that represents people facing the death penalty and brings class action litigation to protect the civil and human rights of people in the criminal justice system. Every year at the Awards Dinner in Washington D.C., SCHR honors those who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of human rights. In recognizing the counsel and advocates for Guantánamo Bay detainees, SCHR applauds their leadership and dedication to protecting the rights of the accused.

"As a public interest law firm challenging systemic abuse in the criminal justice system, we recognize the critical importance of standing by those with few champions," said SCHR Director, Lisa Kung. "We are deeply honored to present the Frederick Douglass Human Rights Award to the attorneys who have chosen principle over popularity to stand by those detained at Guantánamo Bay."

For tickets to the Awards Dinner please contact Moki Macías at 404-688-1202 or mmacias@schr.org. For more information about the Award or the Southern Center for Human Rights, please contact Lisa Kung, Director, at 404-688-1202 or by email at lkung@schr.org.

Foley Hoag Launches New Identity and Integrated Marketing Campaign - Roll-out includes series of ads to run in Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Money, Boston Globe, Forbes.com; ads feature images by fashion photographer Rodney Smith, and tagline “Driving Business Advantage” Sep 24, 2007 Send to a Coleague

Boston, MA - September 24, 2007

SUMMARY

Law firm Foley Hoag LLP has introduced an ambitious new identity and advertising campaign, highlighting its leading dispute resolution and intellectual property practices and its depth in life sciences and technology. Featuring the tagline “Driving Business Advantage,” Foley Hoag’s new platform is designed to bypass conventional law firm messaging to address client demands from their legal advisors for fresh thinking and a keen understanding of client business needs.

The creative centerpiece of the campaign is a series of ads featuring images by noted fashion photographer Rodney Smith, whose work has appeared in New York Magazine and The New York Times Magazine. Instead of touting case wins or deals completed, the ads – comprised of arresting black-and-white images of formally dressed men and women in unlikely settings – are meant to provoke business people to stop and consider how they view big-picture challenges and plot their paths to success.
