Foley Hoag Partner Marty Murphy Appointed Special Prosecutor to Investigate 2009 Death at Bridgewater State Hospital
September 9, 2014
Foley Hoag LLP partner Marty Murphy has been appointed as a special prosecutor to investigate the death of Joshua Messier, a 23-year old mental health patient who died at Bridgewater State Hospital after being restrained by guards at the facility in May 2009.
As special prosecutor, Murphy will have full responsibility to conduct an independent investigation of Messier’s death and, if appropriate, to bring criminal charges against anyone responsible. Murphy’s appointment, originally reported in an Aug. 27 Boston Globe article, became official today.
Murphy will continue his practice representing companies and individuals in complex civil litigation, criminal investigations, and regulatory proceedings while serving as a special prosecutor on a pro bono basis. He will draw on a decade of experience as a state and federal prosecutor, including experience handling more than 100 homicide investigations, in conducting his investigation.
