Foley Hoag Partners Clara Brillembourg and Tafadzwa Pasipanodya Recognized by Latinvex as Top Female Lawyers Specializing in Latin America
November 11, 2022
Foley Hoag LLP partners Clara Brillembourg and Tafadzwa Pasipanodya were recently named to Latinvex's 2022 lists of Latin America's Top 100 Female Lawyers and the Top 33 Female Lawyers in Arbitration & Litigation.
Each year, Latinvex - a publisher of daily news and weekly analysis on Latin American business - selects the top 100 international female lawyers in Latin America by areas of specialty and expertise. The criteria for selection includes a combination of factors, including regional and local prominence, law firm prominence, and awards and recognition from sources such as Chambers and Partners, Legal 500 and Thomson Reuters.
This marks the seventh consecutive year in which Brillembourg has been recognized for her expertise. Latinvex calls attention to her “successful representation of sovereign States before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in disputes involving territorial rights, human rights and environmental harm,” and notes her recent work as counsel to Uruguay and Peru in international investment arbitrations. It also highlights her recent key work before U.S. Courts, including successfully requesting to the United States government the extradition of former President of Peru Alejandro Toledo and other high-profile individuals involved in the Odebrecht bribery scheme.
Latinvex lauds Pasipanodya's "key work" in Latin America, which includes serving as counsel to Uruguay in an UNCITRAL arbitration concerning a $4 billion claim by an iron ore mining company; securing a judgment and a cost award in favor of Uruguay; serving as counsel to El Salvador in a dispute before ICSID concerning gold mining and environmental rights; and helping other Latin American States secure victories in investment arbitrations concerning natural resources. Latinvex also highlights Pasipanodya’s work advising States in disputes against other States concerning the law of the sea, maritime delimitations, territorial claims, human rights, and environmental rights.
Both Brillembourg and Pasipanodya are partners in Foley Hoag’s International Litigation & Arbitration practice. Brillembourg co-chairs the Latin America practice and Pasipanodya chairs the Africa practice.
