Yasmin Al Ameen will be moderating a webinar on "Self-determination, identity, and the rights of minorities in the current times of democratic backsliding", organized by the American Society of International Law's Minorities in International Law Interest Group (MILIG).
Around the world, democratic norms and institutions are under growing strain—and minority communities are often the first to feel the consequences. This conversation will discuss what democratic backsliding means for the rights of minorities, self-determination, and the politics of identity.
The panel will bring together Prof. Nicolas Levrat (Université de Genève and UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues), Prof. Kristin Henrard (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), and Prof. Francesco Palermo (Eurac Research) to explore how individual and collective minority rights are being contested, redefined, and defended in today’s challenging political landscape. The discussion will be followed by a moderated Q&A with the audience.
