Tom Barker, a partner in the firm’s Healthcare Department, was quoted in a
Law360 article recapping his plenary discussion on federal drug pricing policies as part of the Biotech Showcase, which took place in San Francisco concurrently to the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference.
In the discussion, Barker said that the federal government’s focus on prescription drug prices was one of the biggest challenges the industry faced, suggesting that the focus on pricing could stifle innovation: "There's been a shift in political philosophy in the parties over the past 10, 15 years where now it's, I guess, part of the populist movement in the country that the government needs to crack down on drug pricing," he said. "And I think that that is a big mistake."
Panelists also called for additional policy changes to encourage research and innovation in the United States, particularly in light of the growing threat from China.
