Foley Hoag Grows FDA Practice with Addition of Partner Lance Shea
November 20, 2024
Foley Hoag LLP announced that Lance Shea has joined the firm as a partner. Shea has more than three decades of experience representing life sciences companies in complex regulatory and litigation matters, including FDA, product liability and environmental issues. He is resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.
Shea advises clients operating at the crossroads of science and law, with a focus on the drug and medical device industries. He regularly appears before the FDA, other federal agencies and courts. His matters are often focused on health effect causation issues such as efficacy, safety or injury, and involve complex scientific evidence. Shea works closely with expert witnesses to develop product performance evidence (clinical trials and observational studies, pre- and post-marketing), and product characterization studies (dissolution, physicochemical characterization).
“Lance is a valuable addition to our FDA team, bringing his expertise in navigating both regulation and litigation,” said Bryant Godfrey, Co-Chair of the Healthcare Department and Chair of the FDA practice at Foley Hoag. “I’m looking forward to working with him as we continue to grow our practice.”
Shea’s practice focuses on obtaining and protecting marketing exclusivity and market share for medical products, helping clients address marketing approval issues, and advising companies on advertising claims. He is also experienced in the implementation of the novel drug price negotiation provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act.
“I am delighted to be joining Foley Hoag and working with the talented life sciences, healthcare and FDA attorneys at the firm,” said Shea. “The firm is providing the framework for me to grow my practice in a collegial and collaborative environment.”
Shea has taught scientific evidence as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. He lectures in the graduate Regulatory Sciences Program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Shea received his law degree magna cum laude from the University of San Diego School of Law; his Master of Science degree from Arizona State University; and his Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from the University of Arizona. He joins from the Washington, D.C. office of BakerHostetler.
